BREN POLLOCK

“I have loved roses ever since I was a child inspired by the lovely roses my mother grew in our childhood home in Carlsbad, California. When I moved into my first purchased home, I started my own rose garden with the same number and types of roses she grew and in later years had up to 350+ plants in that same garden. "

"....you open always petal by petal myself as
Spring opens her first rose"

My Mother's Roses

My love of roses started with my beautiful Mom, Peggy Nash (Stevenson) Pollock. She grew roses in a prime section of our garden that overlooks a canyon in Carlsbad, California. It had optimal sunshine and ventilation and the roses were always gorgeous. As children, my sister and I were encouraged to help care for them with simple tasks like watering and pulling weeds until we saw an earth worm and ran screaming into the house.

In elementary school, Mom would send me with a rose from her garden to give to my teacher. She carefully placed a wet paper towel around the cut stem and then wrapped the stem and all the thorns with aluminum foil to keep the rose from wilting and to transport it to school without getting poked by the thorns. I remember riding on the bus, protecting the bloom with my life because the reward of the smile on my teachers face was everything in that effort.

My Mom instilled in me the beauty of not only growing roses but what sharing them can do to brighten someone's day.

Thank you Mama for your legacy of beauty and your generous spirit.

Legacy of Rose Lovers

I learned from my Paternal Grandmother that her Mother, my Great Grandmother who I never met, Florence Ella Hubbard (1885 - 1960) was an avid grower and lover of roses. This is a colorized photo of her showing her proud bounty of beautiful blooms.

I get lost in this photo wondering what variety she is holding in her hands. I can hear the screen door behind her creak and close against the wood frame and wonder how she displayed them in her home, all the questions....of a time gone by.

Timeless is the love.

Chelsea Brittlyn

In 2004, 'Lady Bren'©, a beautiful deep pink and white reverse Miniature Rose was named after Bren by her husband, Joe. Later that year, a clear light to medium pink miniature rose, 'Chelsea Brittlyn'© was named after their precious daughter who was 13 years old at the time.

Chelsea is now a young mother and her son Nash is the inspiration behind our 'Wee Buds Project'. She was raised around growing roses in our home garden and attended many rose meetings, exhibiting at shows, schlepping in and out of garden centers in every possible chance to shop for roses or rose supplies.

She was not only a trooper but an essential part of the legacy we have today.

Next Generation Rosarians

Our precious grandson, Nash Zephyr is the inspiration for our Wee Buds Project. Details coming soon.

“A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives you roses.”

The bestest and finest friend I've ever known, Pamela Lueschen is a living plant goddess of every kind of plant imaginable and especially, roses. She helped me with questions when I was starting my own garden and then invited me to my first rose meeting around 1994. It was there I found a special space for knowledge and community. We would attend the Del Mar Fair Rose Shows each summer with our children of whom we are each God parents to. What wonderful days we spent together showing the bounty of our gardens whilst teaching our sweet children an old fashioned tradition at the county fair. We would wake up at the crack of dawn to get there early, grooming the roses for hours, eating donuts, drinking coffee. These were the days I will treasure always and we hope to share the same with our grand children who are just a year apart in age, as are our daughters.
